To clarify before I explain my concerns, I have not had a chance to see the new movie yet and I am still interested in seeing it.
However, I have been put off a little bit by one controversial change. True, the TMNT franchise is used to controversial changes, but this particular change is like no other.
The change is that, for the first time ever, Hamato Yoshi apparently no longer has a connection to Splinter anymore.
He is not the rat's murdered owner like in the original Mirage comics, the live-action films, the 2007 CGI kind-of sequel to the live-action films, Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation, or the 2003 cartoon.
Splinter is not even a mutated Hamato Yoshi in this version like he was in the 1987 cartoon, the Archie Comics series, or the new Nickelodeon cartoon.
It is not helping that while the Shredder is still Japanese, he is apparently not addressed as Oroku Saki, though just because he is only referred to as Shredder doesn't mean they changed his name.
The optimistic side of me hopes that the sequel will expand on the origins of Splinter and the Turtles and incorporates the IDW Comics element of Splinter and the Turtles being the reincarnations of Yoshi and his biological sons, but there is no proof that that is the case and they may have indeed done away with the Hamato-Oroku feud that played an important part in all previous incarnations of the Turtles.
