Farewell, Lotus Blossom is a season 4 episode of the 1987-1996 series.

Synopsis

On their way to a movie, the Turtles must dash off to stop two thieves from making off with a massive antique urn. The thieves manage to get away with a massive pearl pried from the urn, but the urn itself is rescued by the Turtles. The owner says that it is the Urn of Chakahachi, and that it is said to be cursed, so he asks them to protect it in their lair until his security system can be installed.

Meanwhile, Lotus Blossom is having nightmares about a medieval Japanese castle and a vast figure that calls her by name, even as the Turtles try to keep her away from him.

The Urn continues to cause trouble for the Turtles, as it always seems to be trying to smash itself. And somehow April has gotten news of the Urn's location, since she broadcasts it on the news, much to Shredder's anger. He declares that the Urn contains "powers you never dreamed of," and comes up with a ploy to get Lotus to steal it for him. He uses a disguise and a holographic projector to pretend to be the ghost of Chakahachi, and commands her to punish the Turtles for dishonoring their clan's relics.

While the Turtles hunt for clues about the pearl thieves, Lotus attacks them without warning. They hide in a nearby warehouse full of records, and fight Lotus unsuccessfully.

Fortunately Splinter is able to convince Lotus that she is not of the Chakahachi clan, and they start speculating on who could have tricked her. She laments that she doesn't fit into the modern world, and that she wishes she had been born hundreds of years earlier.

Splinter tells them the story of Chakahachi, who was a famed sorcerer whose spirit cannot rest until he finds his missing wife. The Turtles decide to dispose of the Urn by taking it to its proper owner, but are stopped by Rocksteady and Bebop. During the scuffle, the Urn is overturned, rolls down the street, and is smashed by the two mutant thugs.

The enormous ghost of Chakahachi rises from the Urn, still vowing to find his wife from beyond the grave. He decides to turn New York into a replica of medieval Japan, since the magical pearl - which created a replica of Japan inside the Urn - was stolen.

Leonardo frees Lotus, and they head off to find the pearl, while the other Turtles remain to deal with Chakahachi. The angry ghost summons up a number of samurai to attack them.

Leonardo and Lotus find the crooks almost immediately and subdue them, but not before the pearl is tossed into a pile of white onions. They are forced to waste a great deal of time searching for it, but successfully bring it back to Chakahachi.

But when Chakahachi sees Lotus, he exclaims that she is his long-lost wife. She realizes that the wife's soul has always been inside her, and that is the reason she feels so displaced in the modern world. It also explains her dreams.

Chakahachi removes the soul of his wife from Lotus, reconstitutes the Urn, and the two retreat inside to live happily in their replica of medieval Japan. New York turns back to normal.

Notes

  • Final appearance of Lotus.
  • Lotus and Leonardo's relationship appears to have settled into a fond but platonic attachment, versus the romantic attraction in her first appearance.

Errors

  • Leonardo is seen with Raphael's colours for a long speaking shot when he and Lotus are sifting through the onions to look for the missing pearl.
  • He appears with Raphael's colors again when the wife's soul is freed from Lotus' body.
  • After the Turtles rescue the urn and examine it, Leonardo speaks in Donatello's voice.
  • In all the close-up shots of the Technodrome, no lava is seen around its tracks.
  • After Lotus breaks one of Leonardo's swords, another one is seen on his belt after the other Turtles help him up, only to go back to having one sword when the guys take cover in the abandoned record warehouse.
  • The shot of the samurais drawing the swords is repeated in the second part of the fight.
  • Towards the end of April's news report, Rocksteady is wearing Bebop's turtle shoulder pads.
  • Michelangelo's rope is missing its hook when he spins it around, but reappears when it wraps around the pearl thieves.
  • When Bebop and Rocksteady high-five, Rocksteady's belt is coloured grey.
  • Donatello says that ghosts are a scientific impossibility, despite having witnessed Shibano-Sama.
