Some TMNT stuff really isn't for little kids.

The Archie Comics series initially began as an adaptation of the 1987 animated series, and Leonardo was naturally portrayed like his animated counterpart. However, one can argue that he was always serious and his Mirage counterpart was similar throughout the comics. As the series progressed, it began telling original stories. In the Archie Comics series, Leonardo demonstrated a rather strong dislike for firearms, expressed repeatedly because they are dishonorable to him.

Also, 100 years in the future, a future version of Leonardo was depicted, he still lives with his brothers, but has established his own ninja school, in which he himself acted as a teacher (TMNT Adventures #62). Four of his top students were depicted: Nobuko, possibly his love interest; Miles, a young black man; Carmen, a black woman, and possibly his love interest; and Bob, an anthropomorphic baboon. These students seemed to have an "extended family" relationship with the Turtles, Bob in particular referring to them as uncles.

This version of Leonardo made cameo appearances in All Tomorrow's Yesterdays and Turtles Forever.
