Super Robo Mecha Force Five! or SRMFF for short, is a fictional 1980s anime television series appearing in the 2012 TV series' second season. First appearing in the episode "Mutagen Man Unleashed", Mikey had introduced the show to his turtle brothers after he found a bunch of old video tapes in a dumpster, including those of SRMFF. Unlike the first season's Space Heroes, which SRMFF acts as a spiritual successor to, the Turtles quickly all became obsessed with the show; Leo even remarked how his brothers complained about Space Heroes.

The series is mainly a parody of the animated series Voltron and includes elements of the anime Voltes V, Mazinger Z, and the tokusatu Super Sentai (which is adapted to make the American series, Power Rangers).

SRMFF kicked off the episode with some great anime satire, including (as Raph points out) poor lip-syncing (as was the case with early dubbed anime), and archetypal team characters - including the leader, the scientist, the princess, the brute - and an adorable animal sidekick named Squeakums.

SRMFF also presents a variant on the "captain slap" from Space Heroes.

Main characters[]

  • Mighty Super Robo Mecha - The super robot piloted by the Super Robo Mecha Force Five.
  • Captain Dash Coolstar (voiced by Brian Bloom) - The leader of the Super Robo Mecha Force Five who pilots Mighty Super Robo Mecha's torso. Reflecting the parallels to Voltron, he is a combination of Sven/Shiro and Keith.
  • Dr. Blip (voiced by Scott Menville) - The scientific member of the Super Robo Mecha Force Five and creator of Mighty Super Robo Mecha, whose right leg he pilots. He parodies Pidge and Lance (the latter especially reflected in his crush on the Princess, similar to Lance's crush on Allura)
  • Squeakums - The animal sidekick of the Super Robo Mecha Force Five who pilots Mighty Super Robo Mecha's right arm.
  • Lunk (voiced by Nolan North) - The strong and tall member of the Super Robo Mecha Force Five who has attitude and pilots Mighty Super Robo Mecha's left arm. Personality-wise, he parodies Keith, but his design partly resembles that of Hunk.
  • Princess (voiced by Mae Whitman) - The princess of an unnamed planet who is a member of the Super Robo Mecha Force Five and pilots Mighty Super Robo Mecha's left leg. She is a clear parody of Princess Allura.

NOTE: All of the characters are meant to represent the characters in the TMNT series based on their characteristics and behaviors. Captain Coolstar, Dr. Blip, Lunk, Squeakums and Princess being homages to Leo, Donnie, Raph, Mikey and April in this order (the connection between Princess and April is even reflected by the fact that they share the same voice actress).

Villains[]

  • Mind Master (voiced by Nolan North) - A villain whose brain is kept in a robotic body that has his face projected onto its screen.
  • General Unsura (voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson) - A villain where half of his face is human and his horned head is floating inside a glass helmet with.
  • Kill Beast Bots - A race of killer robots.
  • Giant Space Squid - A giant alien squid that lives in outer space.
  • Cyberoid X (voiced by Brian Bloom) - A cybernetic villain.
  • Hydra Beast - A mechanical three-headed hydra creature with wings.
  • Skele-Lord (voiced by Josh Peck) - A horned skeleton villain who is the sworn enemy of the Super Robo Mecha Force Five.

Appearances[]

  • Mutagen Man Unleashed - This episode opens with the first episode of the show, with the Super Robo Mecha Force Five preparing to face off against the Kill Beast Bots. Mikey, who was initially watching it, shows his brothers the tapes of the show he found and before long, they all end up watching the first episode together; Donnie himself initially remarks positively about the show's plot. Dr. Blip also tries to invite Princess out on a date, but she turns him down; Mikey jokingly tells Donnie how that reflects him and April, though Donnie denies it while also dismissing what he said about the show's plot earlier. Later, Princess ends up falling for Dr. Blip after he saves her from a Kill Beast Bot; this gives Donnie hope that April will withhold her grudge against the Turtles.
  • Target: April O'Neil - In this episode, the Super Robo Mecha Force Five face off against a Giant Space Squid, but soon after it is destroyed, Princess quits the team due to the others having forgotten her birthday. She comes back by the end of the episode. While Donnie believes April may never come back to the Turtles, with Mikey rubbing it in by again comparing the initial scene to his life, Leo does believe April might come back, stating how the Princess always comes back to the SRMFF each time she quits the team having done so 27 times by that episode's events.
  • The Good, The Bad and Casey Jones - In this episode, Cyberoid X infiltrates Super Robo Mecha Headquarters and captures the Super Robo Mecha Force Five in "force bubbles". When Leo wonders how one villain could singlehandedly infiltrate Super Robo Mecha HQ, Mikey explains to him that Cyberoid X used his "laser tentacle" to shut down the defense system.
  • Fungus Humungous - In this episode, General Unsura hijacks the Mighty Super Robo Mecha and stomps on Captain Dash Coolstar. According to Mikey, Coolstar was apparently crushed for real in the original Japanese version, though Donnie dismisses it as a cartoon myth; this itself parodies how the original Voltron censored the death of Sven/Shiro in the original Japanese version to simply writing him out of the main plot
  • Mazes & Mutants - In this episode, Mind Master makes an attempt to take control of Captain Dash Coolstar's mind, but with encouragement from Princess, Coolstar manages to break free and subsequently uses a bazooka on Mind Master to defeat him. When Raph wonders where Coolstar pulled out the bazooka from, Donnie tells him he has his own theories though none of them are pleasant.
  • Pizza Face - In this episode, the Super Robo Mecha Force Five face off against the mechanical Hydra Beast, which makes an attempt at eating Mighty Super Robo Mecha's left leg, with the Princess still in it.
  • The Legend of the Kuro Kabuto - An unspecified episode is watched by the gang in this episode.
  • Plan 10 - Skele-Lord faces off against the Super Robo Mecha Force Five twice: once on his own (foiling their battle charge but then getting stomped on by Mighty Super Robo Mecha) and the second time in his own robot (again getting beaten by the MSRM). When Casey watches the initial scene, while he does think the show's cool, he wonders where the subtitles are.
  • Into Dimension X! - In the final episode, the Cyberoid fleet face off against the Super Robo Mecha Force Five with the latter being forced to retreat into a wormhole. Mikey inadvertantly wrecks the tape by trying to take the TV to Donnie.

Trivia[]

  • Super Robo Mecha Force Five! was not TMNT 2012 showrunner Ciro Nieli's first foray into Voltron-inspired animation - he was previously the creator of the 2004-2006 animated series Super Robot Monkey Team Hyperforce Go! (often shortened to SRMTHFG), which in itself was a spoof of Voltron as well as tokusatsu anime such as Science Ninja Team Gatchaman. The series, while produced for American television, was animated in Japan and had an animation style similar to that of typical anime.
  • A rather obvious homage to the plethora of Japanese animated programs featuring giant robots often dubbed "Mecha".
  • Some of the episodes actually parallel the Turtles themselves. The first two episodes in particular reflect the fact Donnie was struggling to cope with April's hatred of them for their (inadvertent) role in her father's mutation.
  • This is Donatello's favorite cartoon.
